The camping loops at Corinth and Clear Creek closed on October 31. So why is the boat ramp just past them still open?
The U.S. Forest Service lists the camping season at both Bankhead National Forest sites as March 8 through October 31. The same pages say each boat ramp is open all year with a day pass. The off-season closes the campsites, but the launches stay open. What sets the limits on a winter day here is how much water sits at the bottom of the ramp, and Alabama Power is still lowering the lake through the end of November.
What Closed, and What Didn't
Only the campsites closed. Here is the winter status of the main launches, as their operators post it. Duncan Bridge is a marina ramp that charges per launch.
| Launch | Where | Winter status | Cost or access note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corinth Recreation Area | Upper Smith Lake, Winston County | Year-round launch with trailer parking and a vault toilet | Day pass required |
| Clear Creek Recreation Area | About 13 miles north of Jasper | Year-round launch | Day pass required |
| Houston Recreation Area | Winston County | Ramp open all year; campground closed | $4 per vehicle |
| Smith Lake Park | Cullman County | Year-round camping; management on site 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily | County park |
| Duncan Bridge Marina | 56 Marina Dr., Arley | Paved ramp open 24/7 | $10 per launch |
Corinth has two ramps. The Forest Service separates the year-round day-use launch from a second launch that serves the campground. In winter, the day-use ramp is the one to plan around.
Smith Lake Park on the Cullman County side is the only place on this list that keeps camping open all year. Its posted management hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Its longer Friday and Saturday hours apply only to the May 1 to September 30 peak season.
"Open All Year" Is a Calendar Promise
These launches stay open on the calendar, but the water at the bottom of each ramp keeps dropping. According to Alabama Power, Smith Lake's lowering starts July 1 and ends November 30, and the fall drawdown gives the reservoir room to store floodwater.
At 2 a.m. on November 2, 2026, the lake read 498.47 feet, or 11.53 feet below its 510-foot full pool, according to a third-party lake-level tracker. The same tracker's November rule curve runs from 498.6 feet on November 2 to 496 feet on November 30. That is a target curve, not a forecast. Even so, it puts the lake about 14 feet under summer level by the end of the month. Every ramp on the table above ends lower on the bank in December than it did on the Fourth of July.
Year-round status tells you a launch is open. It does not tell you how it handles low water. Whether a trailer reaches water on a given Saturday depends on that day's level and on the slope and length of the concrete. Alabama Power's Shorelines site and app show real-time lake levels and can send alerts about generator activity. You can set notifications for specific lakes and days.
Where the Lake Gives You the Most Room
When the water is low, the bigger launch sites give you more margin. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' public boat ramp list shows big differences in size around the lake:
- Smith Lake Dam: 6 lanes, 2 docks and 107 trailer spaces
- Smith Lake Park: 6 lanes, 3 docks, 166 trailer spaces and 10 car spaces
- Lion's Park on Lick Creek: 1 lane and 21 trailer spaces
Alabama Power also lists a Smith Dam Ramp as an accessible ramp. More lanes and more parking mean less waiting on a cold morning when several boats arrive at once. Those counts come from the state's facility records, which do not rate how any ramp handles low water.
Some smaller launches get harder to use as the lake drops. The Brushy Creek Launch at the Highway 63 bridge in Winston County is a steep launch, and it has had washout and rutting problems in the past. Check it in person before you back a trailer down it.
Some private ramps are built with the drawdown in mind. Speegle's Marina at 7146 County Road 310 in Crane Hill has a secondary ramp designed for low water, but only its RV park guests and on-site boat storage customers can use it. If you already store a boat there, that ramp is your winter option.
Low Water Is Work Season at the Dock
The drawdown also exposes parts of the shoreline. Alabama Power notes that lower winter levels give property owners a chance to maintain docks and seawalls. The Shorelines app also lets owners apply for shoreline-work permits.
At winter pool, more of the dock structure and seawall is above the waterline, where it can be inspected and repaired.
Where the Lake Still Serves Lunch
For many people, a winter day on the lake means one run up the water, then a warm table. The Grille at Trident Marina, 21680 County Road 222 in Crane Hill, posted a new winter menu in October 2026. Its posted hours are:
- Monday and Tuesday: closed
- Wednesday and Thursday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Friday and Saturday: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Sunday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a brunch menu
The restaurant was on the property before the Trident family took over the marina in 2015 and had been running for more than 50 years by then. It started with 50 seats. The marina next door keeps its own hours: closed Monday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Winter hours can change with the weather, so call ahead at (256) 841-4016 before a weekday trip.
If you've pulled your own boat for the season, Squirrel's Boat Rental at Rock Creek Marina says it is open year-round and takes reservations by phone. That's an option for the warm afternoons Alabama usually gets in December.
A December Day Off the Water
By mid-December the lake should be near the bottom of its curve, and some weekends won't be boating weather. The Cullman Christkindlmarkt opens on Thursday, November 19, at Depot Park, 107 Arnold St NW in Cullman. Opening night runs 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and includes the lighting of the Christmas Pyramid. The market runs through December 23 with free admission and opens seven days a week starting December 10.
Before You Hitch the Trailer This Winter
- Check the current level on Shorelines that morning. The late-November target is about 14 feet below full pool.
- Pick a launch by lane count, not just distance. Smith Lake Park and Smith Lake Dam have six lanes each.
- For Corinth or Clear Creek, plan on a day pass. At Houston, bring $4 per vehicle.
- Go to Corinth's day-use launch, not the campground ramp.
- Look at a steep or rural launch on foot before you back down it.
- Call Trident before a midweek lunch run. The Grille is closed Monday and Tuesday.
Low water also shows how a lakefront lot looks from the water in winter.
